1 Granary: The Influential Platform Holding the Fashion Establishment to Account
1 Granary is a platform dedicated to highlighting the teams behind fashion collections by crediting the full design teams rather than focusing on a single star. Founded in 2012 as a student magazine by Olya Kuryshchuk at Central Saint Martins, the platform has grown significantly and now attracts 19,000 Substack subscribers and 314,000 Instagram followers.
The platform operates as a community hub advocating for jobbing designers and emphasizes transparency and crediting collective work. It maintains a strict ethos against gossip or shaming individuals, prioritizing respectful, solution-oriented reporting aimed at moving the fashion industry forward.
To further this mission, 1 Granary is launching the 1 Granary Design Awards, featuring 20 categories. Winners are chosen by approximately 1,000 voters, including other designers and brand heads. Each winning entry will list the entire team involved, from junior designers to creative directors, underscoring the importance of collaboration.
In addition to its awards, 1 Granary works across recruitment for brands and student projects at about 50 universities globally, supported by a team of six part-timers. The platform has also influenced important industry conversations, such as debates around leadership diversity in top fashion roles at major groups like Kering.
Expanding its coverage, 1 Granary addresses the impact of AI on stylists as well as financial challenges in the industry, including the collapse of platforms like Ssense. In October, it published a list of brands owed money by Ssense, reflecting its commitment to transparency and advocacy within the fashion sector.
