In the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 opening-round fixtures held in Tangier and Fes, Morocco, Nigeria narrowly defeated Tanzania 2-1 in Group C at Fes. Alex Iwobi's cross was headed home by Semi Ajayi to give Nigeria the lead. Tanzania equalised through Charles M’Mombwa before Ademola Lookman scored a late winner from 25 yards.

In Group D at Tangier, Senegal secured a comfortable 3-0 victory against Botswana. Nicolas Jackson scored twice, with the opening goal assisted by Ismail Jakobs' low cross and the second finishing a pass from Ismaïla Sarr. Cherif Ndiaye added a late third for Senegal.

DR Congo claimed a 1-0 win over Benin in Group C, with Théo Bongonda scoring in the 16th minute. A potential second goal by Bakambu was ruled offside after a VAR check.

Following the first round, Senegal leads Group D on goal difference, while DR Congo and Nigeria share positions behind them in Group C.
