Ahmed al-Ahmed Speaks of Heroic Actions During Bondi Beach Attack
Ahmed al-Ahmed, a tobacco shop owner from Sydney's south, disarmed attacker Sajid Akram during the Bondi Beach attack on 14 December, an event that left 15 people dead at a Hanukkah celebration.
Despite being shot five times, Ahmed's quick actions saved many lives. Footage shows him tackling Akram, retrieving the gun, and warning him to drop the weapon. He described experiencing a surge of resolve to protect others during the incident.
Ahmed was with his cousin having coffee when the shooting began. He underwent three surgeries in a Sydney hospital, and his left arm nerve injury is not expected to regain normal function for at least six months.
The attacker, Sajid Akram, was killed by police. His son, Naveed Akram, was wounded and later charged with 59 offences.
NSW Premier Chris Minns visited Ahmed in hospital, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised his courage. A GoFundMe fundraiser raised about AU$2.5 million for Ahmed.
Ahmed's family and community have publicly supported him, with dignitaries and Jewish community leaders also visiting during his recovery.
