Alex Carey Ton Helps Australia Recover from Early England Onslaught on Day One of Third Ashes Test
Australia were 326-8 at stumps on day one of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval. Alex Carey scored a century, making 106, while Usman Khawaja contributed 82 after being recalled to the side. Carey shared a 61-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne and a 91-run stand with Khawaja.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat. The day was played in 35C heat and included a minute’s silence for the Bondi attack.
England fast bowler Jofra Archer took 3-29 from 16 overs, claiming early wickets of Cameron Green and Marnus Labuschagne after lunch. Travis Head was dismissed for 10 by Brydon Carse in the first over; Carse's overstepping five times in the over did not prevent him from taking a remarkable one-handed catch by Zak Crawley.
Steve Smith withdrew before play due to dizziness and nausea, leading to Khawaja's recall, who made a significant impact on the innings.
