Alex Sarama Named Head Coach of Portland Fire for WNBA Debut Season
Alex Sarama, a 30-year-old British-born coach, was named head coach of the Portland Fire for the WNBA's debut season on October 28, 2025. The Portland Fire are preparing for their first season in the WNBA under Sarama's leadership.
Sarama founded the Guildford Goldhawks youth club and led the under-14 girls team to a national championship. He studied history at the University of Nottingham and coached players older than him early in his career.
He has worked in the NBA International Office in London, Madrid, and Antwerp, with the G-League's Rip City Remix in player development, and with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Sarama views the UK as a sleeping basketball giant and advocates for more coaching education and development to unlock the country's potential in basketball.
He is the author of Transforming Basketball and plans to implement a unified coaching methodology, shared play framework, individual development plans, and documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) across the Portland Fire organization.
