Allegations of Listening Devices in SNP MSP Office Raise Concerns About Workplace Conduct
In late 2023, a former staff member allegedly placed listening devices in the office of a Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). The individual involved is no longer employed by an elected representative but currently serves as an office bearer in a local SNP branch.
Responsibility for managing staffing issues lies with individual MSPs. An SNP spokesperson emphasized that employment processes involving parliamentarians are confidential and do not involve the party directly. A Scottish Parliament spokesman added that MSPs handle their own staff and any workplace disputes.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney commented on the incident, describing the conduct as completely unacceptable and expressing a desire for an open and transparent environment. He also noted he was not familiar with all the details. The matter was raised with the Presiding Officer, Alison Johnstone.
Reports have described the situation as traumatic for those involved, underscoring that no one should fear or be harassed when performing their duties. The MSP concerned has been approached for comment regarding the allegations.
