Andrea Egan Elected Leader of Unison, Signaling Potential Shifts in Labour Relations
Andrea Egan has been elected leader of Unison, the UK's largest union, defeating incumbent Christina McAnea by 60% to 40% in a vote with a 7% turnout. The results were announced on 17 December 2025, with Egan set to take office in January. Unison, which has over 1.4 million members, is also Labour's largest union donor, having contributed about £1.49 million last year.
Egan, who was expelled from the Labour Party in 2022, has vowed to end Unison's subservient relationship with Labour. She plans to launch a comprehensive review of Labour–Unison relations and stated she would oppose funding Labour MPs or candidates who oppose welfare protections. This election victory could weaken Sir Keir Starmer's influence on Labour's ruling National Executive Committee and potentially reduce Unison's funding to Labour.
Egan cited the emergence of the Your Party, founded by Zarah Sultana, as indicating a viable alternative to Labour for some union members. She also suggested she could support Andy Burnham for Labour leadership, although Burnham would need to secure a parliamentary seat. Notably, the mainstream Labour group backed by Burnham welcomed her election.
Keir Starmer congratulated Egan on her victory, while Christina McAnea was praised for her long-standing contributions, including her role in securing the Employment Rights Bill. The election result highlights ongoing tensions between the Labour leadership and major unions, signaling potential shifts in union funding and influence over Labour policy.
