Anna's Archive Claims to Have Copied Nearly All of Spotify's Music Library
Anna's Archive has announced that it has scraped approximately 86 million Spotify audio files, totaling around 300 terabytes, along with metadata covering 99% of Spotify's 256 million tracks. This effort reportedly includes 186 million unique ISRCs and creates an archive 37 times larger than MusicBrainz by track count. The archive distributes this data via bulk torrents.
The top tracks include "Die With A Smile" by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars with 3.07 billion plays, "BIRDs OF A FEATHER" by Billie Eilish with 3.13 billion plays, and "DtMF" by Bad Bunny with 1.12 billion plays. These three songs represent a significant share of total streams. Popular tracks are preserved in original 160 kbps OGG Vorbis format, while less popular content is compressed to 75 kbps OGG Opus to save space.
More than 70% of Spotify's tracks have a popularity rating of zero, with about 210,000 songs (0.1%) having a popularity of 50 or higher driving most listening activity. The archive chose not to include the full catalog, as doing so would require an additional approximately 700 terabytes of storage for content that accounts for only about 0.04% of listening activity, much of which is AI-generated or considered low-value.
Anna's Archive has faced significant legal pushback. Belgium blocked the archive with fines of up to €500,000 scheduled for 2025; the UK High Court blocked it in 2024; and Germany blocked the main domains also in 2025. Additionally, Google has removed approximately 749 million Anna's Archive URLs from search results in response to DMCA requests since 2012.
Despite these challenges, the data is already distributed via thousands of torrent nodes, making centralized takedown efforts unlikely to succeed. The archive emphasizes its focus on preservation and redundancy over conventional licensing models. Compared to the Internet Archive, Anna's Archive claims to have around 31,000 times more tracks than the Great 78 Project. The rollout of audio files is gradual, with the most popular tracks released first and metadata already made available while more audio files continue to be distributed.
