Anthony Joshua Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash; Two Team Members Killed
A crash occurred around 12:00 local time on 29 December 2025 on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State near Lagos, involving a black Lexus and a stationary red truck. Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that the Lexus, which was speeding, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre.
Two members of Anthony Joshua's team, Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele, were killed in the accident. Anthony Joshua, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was injured and taken to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. He is described as stable, conscious, and under observation, and is in contact with his family.
A joint statement from the Ogun and Lagos state governments confirmed Joshua's condition and announced a comprehensive investigation into the crash. Joshua had recently defeated Jake Paul on 19 December and has been spending time in Nigeria, where he has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Tributes have been paid from boxing circles and others. Eddie Hearn expressed his condolences for Ghami and Ayodele, Jake Paul commented on the incident, and Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu personally spoke with Joshua to offer condolences and wishes for a speedy recovery.
Plans are underway in Ogun State to name a new indoor boxing venue after Anthony Joshua. Additionally, the London gym Evolve, co-founded by Sina Ghami, will close on 30 December following the tragedy.
