Anthony Joshua's Driver Charged with Dangerous Driving after Fatal Crash in Nigeria
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, the driver of British boxer Anthony Joshua, has been charged with dangerous driving, driving without a valid licence, and driving without due care following a fatal crash on December 29 in Ogun State, Nigeria. The accident occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway approximately 30 miles from Lagos when a passenger-side tyre of the Lexus SUV burst while overtaking. This caused the vehicle to collide with a stationary lorry illegally parked on the hard shoulder, which was carrying soya beans.
Two people died at the scene: Latif Ayodele, 36, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, 36, his strength coach. Joshua, 36, and the driver survived the crash with minor injuries. Kayode was hospitalised but has since been bailed on a 5 million naira (£2,580) bond. However, he remains in custody until bail conditions are met and is scheduled to appear in court on January 20.
The Federal Road Safety Corps reported that the vehicle was travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit at the time of the crash. The Ogun state government confirmed that Joshua and another passenger were evacuated to a Lagos medical facility, where doctors stated they are stable and do not require emergency intervention. A medical team continues to monitor their condition.
Kayode has been a longstanding member of Joshua's team. This incident occurred just ten days after Joshua's boxing victory over Jake Paul, with expectations that Joshua might return to the sport early this year.
