At Least 15 Killed and 15 Injured in Guatemala Bus Crash
On 26 December 2025, a tragic bus accident occurred in Guatemala when a bus traveling from Guatemala City to Totonicapan plunged about 330 feet (100 meters) into a ravine on the Inter-American Highway near the 174 km marker in Cumbre de Alaska, located in the western Totonicapán department.
At least 15 people were killed and 15 more injured in the crash. Emergency crews spent more than two hours rescuing the injured and retrieving bodies, while traffic along the Inter-American Highway was temporarily suspended.
Following the crash, President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning and announced that the government is coordinating necessary assistance for those affected.
The National Transit Safety Observatory of Guatemala reported that from January to October 2025 there were 446 public-transport accidents nationwide, resulting in 111 deaths and 623 injuries.
