Australia Implements Under-16 Social Media Ban Affecting Over Two Million Youths
Australia has introduced a social media ban targeting users under the age of 16, impacting more than two million youths nationwide. The ban took effect recently and received robust public support, with approximately two-thirds of voters in favor according to reports.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking from Kirribilli House, described the rollout as world-leading. Ten platforms were directed to comply with the ban, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Kick, Reddit, and Twitch; Bluesky is also considering compliance.
The eSafety Commissioner issued notices to these platforms seeking user counts as of December 9 and 11 to verify the removal of under-16 accounts, with plans to publicly release data and conduct a formal review in 2027. Platforms employ various age-verification methods such as facial age estimation, behavioural signals, and ID uploads, although many allowed access based on early account creation dates.
Reddit has challenged the ban in the High Court, claiming it infringes on freedom of political communication. A separate legal challenge from a digital rights group is also expected.
The ban has attracted international attention, with potential similar measures being considered in Malaysia, Indonesia, Denmark, and Norway. The launch gained momentum in part due to campaigns by News Corp, including a public cost of A$100,000 for a United Nations trip by MP Anika Wells and prominent Harbour Bridge branding.
Regulators will monitor mental health outcomes and changes in school test scores as part of ongoing oversight. A detailed evaluation of the law's impact is set for 2027 to inform future policy decisions.
