Australian Cricketer Usman Khawaja Announces Retirement Ahead of Ashes Test
Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja announced his international retirement at a press conference held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) ahead of the fifth Ashes Test. Since his debut in 2011, Khawaja has played 87 of Australia's 153 Test matches. Known as a specialist in the multi-format era, he is recognized for his compact technique and for popularizing the reverse sweep.
During his farewell, Khawaja reflected on his relationship with God, his family, and his experiences with racism, all of which helped shape him. He candidly addressed being stereotyped due to his approach to the game and the judgment he felt for his dedication and training.
His career saw 44 Test matches on either side of a 2019 omission, posting impressive averages of 40.66 before the omission and improving to 46.1 afterward. Khawaja's debut and his Ashes farewell both took place at the SCG, adding to the ground's rich history in Sydney cricket.
