Australian Injured in New Year's Eve Fire at Swiss Ski Resort
A fire and explosion at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Eve injured 115 people and killed 40. Among the injured is an Australian who is receiving medical treatment and consular assistance, though their name has not been released for privacy reasons. Australian Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen confirmed the individual’s injury and ongoing support.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is providing consular support, actively making urgent inquiries to determine if other Australians were affected while respecting privacy obligations that limit further details. Consular assistance includes contacting local hospitals and authorities, offering lists of medical providers, and helping with communication to family members.
The fire started around 1:30 am local time at the popular tourist bar located in the center of Crans-Montana, in the Valais canton. Swiss police stated that arson is not suspected and the cause is believed to be accidental. Due to the severity of some victims’ burns, some have yet to be identified.
Australians concerned about loved ones can contact DFAT’s 24/7 consular emergency line at 1300 555 135.
