Benin Secures First AFCON 2025 Win With 1-0 Victory Over Botswana
On 27 December 2025 in Rabat, Benin defeated Botswana 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Group D match. The only goal was scored by Yohan Roche in the first half, around the 30-minute mark, after his shot from inside the area deflected into the net.
This victory ended Benin's 15-game winless streak in AFCON, which included five draws and ten defeats. Meanwhile, Botswana, who were eliminated from the tournament as a result of the loss, had a chance to score through Mothusi Johnson but hit the bar instead.
On the same day, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo also won their Group D openers. Additionally, Group C matches featuring Uganda versus Tanzania and Nigeria versus Tunisia were scheduled later that day.
The win keeps Benin's hopes of progressing further in AFCON alive.
