Bhutan Commits Up to 10,000 Bitcoin to Support New Mindfulness-Based Economic Hub
Bhutan has unveiled a national Bitcoin Development Pledge to allocate up to 10,000 BTC, valued at about $860 million at current prices, to support the Gelephu Mindfulness City in southern Bhutan. This special administrative region aims to use digital assets for its financial reserves to diversify Bhutan's economy and attract investment.
The pledge will focus on long-term development with priorities on capital preservation, transparency, and stewardship. Bhutan has historically mined bitcoin using surplus hydropower and plans to continue mining from excess clean energy without increasing its environmental impact.
Authorities are exploring different strategies for deploying these assets, including collateralization, treasury management, or long-term holding to fund development while preserving value. Final decisions on asset deployment are expected in the coming months.
This initiative is part of Bhutan's broader digital strategy, which includes establishing a blockchain-based national digital identity, enabling crypto payments for tourism and merchants, and introducing TER, a sovereign-backed gold token.
