Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs Experience $582M Outflow Amid Institutional Risk Reduction

On Monday, Bitcoin spot ETFs experienced approximately $357.6 million in net outflows, while Ethereum spot ETFs saw around $225 million in outflows, amounting to a combined total of about $582.4 million in a single day.

For December, Bitcoin spot ETFs have reported roughly $705 million in outflows against $480 million in inflows, resulting in a net drawdown of nearly $225 million. Ethereum spot ETFs have recorded about $411 million in inflows and $403 million in outflows, keeping the segment close to flat for the month.

Outflows in Bitcoin ETFs were distributed across Fidelity FBTC, Ark ARKB, and Bitwise BITB, with BlackRock IBIT remaining flat on the day.

This pullback is primarily attributed to macroeconomic de-risking and a broader risk-off environment in equities rather than crypto-specific stress, with ETF flows serving as a channel for adjusting exposure amid faltering tech stocks.

The macroeconomic context includes the Federal Reserve’s December 10 decision that combined a rate cut with signals of an easing-cycle pause, tighter financial conditions, and a rise in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to about 4.2%.

Tech-sector weaknesses and AI-related concerns contributed to the risk-off sentiment; however, Bitcoin prices stayed within recent ranges, suggesting that flow movements rather than spot price changes are steering the shifts.

Longer-term views among analysts remain cautiously optimistic for Bitcoin given expanding liquidity conditions and diminishing selling pressure from long-term holders, noting that ETF positions could support a potential recovery.

Over the past six months, Bitcoin has trended downward while major U.S. indices held steady; November was the worst month of the year for Bitcoin, and December has shown a continuing sideways trend with limited sustained demand.
