Black Diamond Pool Erupts Again at Yellowstone National Park
Black Diamond Pool in Biscuit Basin, Yellowstone National Park, erupted with visible muddy plumes on Saturday morning around 9:23 am local time. The eruption was captured on video by an official USGS camera and shared on social media, with USGS Volcanoes describing the event with the exclamation “Kablooey!”
This eruption is part of ongoing "dirty eruptions" at Black Diamond Pool, which have occurred sporadically since 2024. Notably, a July 2024 event caused damage to a boardwalk and led to the closure of the area. To improve monitoring, a new camera along with a seismic and acoustic monitoring station equipped with temperature sensors was installed in summer 2025, enhancing detection and characterization of such eruptions.
Experts indicate that the current event fits a pattern of activity at Black Diamond Pool observed over roughly the past 19 months, with the latest eruption occurring under clear blue winter skies. Yellowstone National Park features a vast hydrothermal system containing more than 10,000 features and over 500 geysers, emphasizing the park's dynamic geothermal environment.
