Bolsonaro Temporarily Released for Hernia Operation While Serving Prison Sentence
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes granted Jair Bolsonaro permission to leave the Brasilia federal police jail temporarily on 25 December to undergo a hernia operation, with arrangements made for his transfer to a hospital.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula. He has been detained as a flight risk rather than being held at home. In November, Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to receive full-time medical care due to ongoing health issues since he was stabbed in 2018 and following intestinal surgery in April.
This leave for surgery coincides with a domestic effort to reduce Bolsonaro's jail time through a bill that President Lula has stated he will veto. Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, posted a video on X asking supporters to pray for Bolsonaro during this time.
