Bondi Beach Hanukkah shooting kills 11; UK increases security measures
A shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach in Sydney resulted in at least 11 people killed and 29 hospitalized, according to police. The attack was described as sickening by Sir Keir Starmer.
In response, the UK government expressed solidarity with Australia and announced plans to work with the Community Security Trust (CST) to enhance policing of Hanukkah events across the UK. The Metropolitan Police will increase its presence, conduct additional patrols, and engage with the Jewish community ahead of Hanukkah.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed that the Metropolitan Police would raise visibility in Jewish communities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that coordination with the CST regarding policing efforts is ongoing.
The UK Jewish Leadership Council urged the protection of Hanukkah events amid ongoing concerns about anti-Semitism. Green Party leader Zack Polanski announced he would attend a Hanukkah event, emphasizing the need to ensure it remains a celebration rather than a time of mourning.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews offered support to Australian partners and maintained communication with the UK government on the response. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper advised British nationals in Sydney to contact the Sydney consulate for assistance.
