The average UK adult consumed 10.2 alcoholic drinks per week last year, marking the lowest level since data collection began in 1990. This decline represents a drop of more than a quarter from the peak consumption of 14 drinks per week recorded two decades ago.

Despite the decrease in the average number of drinks consumed, total abstention is not rising. Experts attribute the trend primarily to more moderate drinking habits combined with an aging population. Other factors cited for the decline include increased health consciousness and a higher cost of living, which has reduced social drinking.

Even with the reduction, weekly alcohol consumption remains above the NHS recommended limit of 14 units. For perspective, consuming 10 pints of low-strength beer equals approximately 20 units, while 10 large glasses of wine equate to about 30 units.

A recent Drinkaware survey found that 73% of UK adult drinkers plan to moderate their drinking over Christmas, and 28% intend to drink more during the holidays but reduce their consumption in the new year. Drinkaware advises individuals to assess their drinking habits, adhere to the 14-unit weekly guideline, seek support from friends and family if needed, and consider low- or no-alcohol options to reduce health risks.
