Browns Decide to Keep Deshaun Watson Inactive as Season Ends
Deshaun Watson was not activated to the Cleveland Browns' active roster after the 21-day window following his activation from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Watson suffered a torn right Achilles in October and re-tore the same injury during rehab in January. In March 2022, he signed a fully guaranteed five-year contract worth $230 million.
Watson was suspended for 11 games in the 2022 season amid sexual assault allegations. Over four seasons with Cleveland, Watson has started 19 games, with the Browns holding a 9-10 record during those starts. He has completed 61.2% of his passes for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that the decision to keep Watson inactive was the right one and that the quarterback will focus on getting healthy and stronger. It remains unclear who will be the starting quarterback next season; potential options include Watson if he is healthy, as well as backups Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.
