California Triathlete Erica Fox's Body Found After Disappearance Near Monterey
Erica Fox, 55, a seasoned California triathlete, disappeared after leaving Lovers Point near Monterey with a group of more than a dozen swimmers on December 21. Her body was recovered six days later on December 27 at Davenport Beach, south of Santa Cruz, and confirmed by her husband and father.
A witness reported seeing a shark carrying what appeared to be a human body in its mouth near Lovers Point, which triggered a large-scale search effort led by the Coast Guard. The search operation involved multiple boat crews and was suspended after 15 hours covering approximately 84 nautical miles.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office confirmed the discovery of the body and stated that the death is under investigation. They are coordinating efforts with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and the Pacific Grove Police Department.
Fox was an experienced swimmer who competed in numerous triathlons, including the Escape From Alcatraz. Her husband and swim club organized a memorial walk along Lovers Point on December 22 in her honor.
Shark attacks involving humans are rare on the California coast. Prior to Fox's death, there have been 16 shark-related fatalities in California over the past 75 years. Authorities believe Fox did not return to shore after leaving Lovers Point with the group of swimmers.
