Calls for UK leadership to resist US National Security Strategy's stance on Europe
Ed Davey has urged the UK Prime Minister to stand up to Donald Trump and prevent any interference in UK democracy following the release of the US National Security Strategy.
The US strategy highlights concerns that Europe faces "civilisational erasure," calls for resistance to Europe’s current trajectory, and advocates reducing migration. It also cites worries about censorship of free speech, loss of national identities, and questions the reliability of some European economies and militaries as allies.
In contrast, Keir Starmer has avoided criticising Trump directly, instead emphasizing Europe’s unity behind Ukraine and democratic values. Davey, however, insists the Prime Minister should take a firmer stance against Trump.
Downing Street defended the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, after Trump labeled him a disaster and incompetent, reaffirming the UK's strong ties with both Trump and Khan.
The Prime Minister has promoted a close relationship with Trump, pointing to a trade deal as a positive outcome of that relationship.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin welcomed the US strategy, calling it largely consistent with Moscow’s vision.
