China to Hold Military Drills Around Taiwan Amid Ongoing Tensions
China will conduct military drills around Taiwan codenamed Justice Mission 2025, simulating seizure and blockade operations. The exercises, scheduled for Tuesday, will involve multiple branches of the Chinese military including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, with live-fire components.
These drills come shortly after the US approved an $11 billion weapons package to Taiwan, a move that prompted Beijing to sanction US defense firms. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and strongly opposes separatist movements. Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te, has been accused by Beijing of pursuing independence, whereas Lai maintains that Taiwan is a sovereign entity.
Taiwan's defense ministry reported detecting Chinese aircraft and ships around its territory on Monday. In response, Taiwan deployed its forces and missile systems, maintaining a high state of alert.
The Eastern Theater Command described the drills as a "shield of justice," warning those seeking independence of potential annihilation if they encounter it. These exercises are notable as they are the first under Yang Zhibin, who took over as the head of the Eastern Theater Command in October.
These drills reflect the ongoing tensions since 2022, during which China has increased its military activities in the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, Taiwan continues to conduct its own annual Han Kuang drills and advances its defense capabilities, including deploying a dome-like air defense system.
