Coinbase Expands Into Traditional Stock Trading, Prediction Markets, and Solana DeFi Integration
On December 17, 2025, Coinbase announced an expansion beyond digital assets by offering traditional stock trading to U.S. customers through a commission-free brokerage. The platform will provide access to thousands of equities and ETFs with trading available five days a week. Additionally, Coinbase plans to introduce perpetual stock futures outside the U.S. in the following year.
The company also revealed Kalshi-powered prediction markets and intends to incorporate more platforms in the future. Coinbase aims to enable tokenized stock trading in an upcoming quarter, contingent on SEC guidance, using a wrap/unwrap model across blockchains while maintaining custody control of the underlying stock.
Further integration includes support for assets on Solana-based decentralized exchanges (DEXs) within the Coinbase app. The rebranded self-custody wallet, Base app, is now available in 140 countries, allowing millions of assets on Base and Solana to be accessible by default in the main Coinbase app, with plans for further network expansion.
Coinbase is building an end-to-end platform to digitize real-world assets and offers a service for custom stablecoins linked to the x402 internet standard for stablecoin payments, aimed at AI agent transactions.
The system update features an AI-powered wealth-management advisor designed to assist users in portfolio building and news digestion.
Market analysts such as Compass Point estimate approximately $230 million in annual revenue from prediction markets. However, Mizuho cautions that a sizable share of users might sell cryptocurrency to fund wagers.
Coinbase shares traded around $244 with a year-to-date decline of about 2%, as the company lays the foundation for its broader vision in finance.
