Coinbase to Acquire The Clearing Company to Expand Prediction Markets
Coinbase has announced plans to acquire The Clearing Company in a move to grow its prediction markets business as part of its broader plan to become an "Everything Exchange." The Clearing Company, based in San Francisco and led by Toni Gemayel, includes team members with experience from Kalshi and Polymarket. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the closing is expected in January 2026.
The acquisition brings expertise in building and scaling event-based trading systems to Coinbase. This follows Coinbase's existing efforts, including allowing users to trade real-world event outcomes through a partnership with Kalshi.
Prediction markets have shown significant growth, with weekly notional volume reportedly above $4 billion according to Dune Analytics. The Clearing Company previously raised $15 million in seed funding in August, led by Union Square Ventures with participation from Coinbase Ventures, and has applied for a Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) clearinghouse license.
