Collision Between Two Trains Near Machu Picchu Causes Fatality and Injuries
A collision occurred around 13:20 local time on Tuesday on the rail line linking Ollantaytambo Station and Aguas Calientes, near Machu Picchu. Two trains operated by PeruRail and Inca Rail collided head-on, resulting in the death of one train driver and injuries to at least 40 people.
A passenger described chaotic scenes with staff rushing around, numerous injuries, and passengers on the floor. He assisted others with pain relief. Following the accident, another train arrived with medical assistance, and passengers were taken to a nearby village before being moved to a hotel where they received food and medical care. The typical journey between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes usually takes about 90 minutes.
PeruRail expressed regret over the incident and stated that its staff immediately provided first aid to the driver, conductor, and passengers. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
This incident occurs amid a dispute over transport bidding for Machu Picchu, with local communities criticizing the openness of the process and raising concerns about high ticket prices and limited access.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting British nationals involved in the accident, and the US embassy reported that US citizens were among those injured.
