Creators Coalition Launches to Advocate for AI Rules in Entertainment Industry
The Creators Coalition on AI was launched on December 17, 2025, with the goal of pushing for enforceable rules on how artificial intelligence is trained and used within the entertainment industry. This coalition seeks to establish voluntary standards for responsible AI use and is not structured as a labor union. Instead, it plans to employ public pressure and, if necessary, policy and legal action to influence the industry.
Co-founded by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt and inspired by filmmaker Daniel Kwan, the coalition aims to extend its reach beyond Hollywood to all types of creators, including YouTubers, podcasters, and newsletter writers. Founding members include Natasha Lyonne, David Goyer, Randima Fernando, and Dawn Nakagawa. Over 500 signatories have joined, among them prominent figures such as Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, Guillermo del Toro, Aaron Sorkin, Ava DuVernay, and Taika Waititi.
The coalition addresses longstanding concerns related to artificial intelligence, particularly regarding the potential replication of scripts, voices, or performances without the consent or compensation of the creators. These issues have been central to strikes and lawsuits in recent years. The initiative follows the 2023 strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America, which revolved around disputes over copyright, training data, and likeness rights. While various state laws on AI exist, they face challenges at the federal level.
Ultimately, the group aims to influence broader industry practices and policy by asserting that creators can gain power through collective action, public pressure, litigation, or legislation.
