David Walliams Dropped from Waterstones Festival and Publishing Following Allegations
David Walliams has been removed from the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival scheduled for February 7 in Dundee, and taken off the speakers list. This decision came after an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward young women.
HarperCollins, Walliams’ publisher, announced it would not publish any new titles by the author under the leadership of its new CEO. Reports indicate that a five-figure payout was made to at least one complainant. Walliams denies these allegations, and his spokesperson stated that he was never informed of any accusations by HarperCollins and is currently seeking legal advice.
Waterstones confirmed that HarperCollins informed them of Walliams' removal from the Dundee festival line-up. Additionally, Walliams was due to feature on a Boxing Day festive special of "Would I Lie to You?" on BBC One; however, following controversy over Nazi salutes earlier in the year which led to a BBC apology, the segment was not broadcast.
Two of Walliams' books, "Mr Stink" and "The Boy in the Dress," have been adapted for television and aired on CBBC.
