Deadly Fire at Le Constellation Nightclub in Crans-Montana During New Year's Eve
A fire broke out at the Le Constellation basement nightclub in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during New Year's Eve celebrations, resulting in more than 40 deaths and dozens suffering serious burn injuries. The blaze began around 1:30 am local time (00:30 GMT), with police arriving within minutes, but the venue was already engulfed in flames. The nightclub's maximum capacity was about 300 people. Witnesses described a rapid crowd surge as patrons tried to escape through a narrow staircase and a small doorway; some windows were broken to aid escape.
Investigations are ongoing, with officials stating there is no indication of arson. A bartender reportedly carried a waitress holding champagne bottles with sparklers near the low ceiling, possibly igniting combustible gases that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Many victims could not be immediately identified. The regional hospital’s ICU and operating rooms reached full capacity, and victims were transported to hospitals across Switzerland with helicopters deployed to assist.
Around 15 Italians and eight French citizens have been reported missing. Several victims are from multiple countries. In response to the tragedy, a national flag was ordered to fly at half-mast for five days. Crans-Montana had banned New Year fireworks due to low rainfall. The incident is considered one of Switzerland’s worst tragedies. Le Constellation attracted both locals and tourists and had no entrance fee.
