Deadly Shooting at Brown University Leaves Two Dead and Nine Wounded
A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island resulted in at least two fatalities and nine individuals wounded. Authorities took a person of interest into custody early Sunday; the individual, described by Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez as being in their 30s, was detained at a hotel in Coventry.
In response, the New England Patriots expressed that they were heartbroken by the incident, extended their sympathies to those affected, thanked first responders, and affirmed their support for Brown University and the Rhode Island community. The Patriots were scheduled to play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, located approximately 25 miles from Brown University, while the Bills were staying near the campus.
Brown University canceled all classes, exams, and papers for the remainder of the fall semester following the shooting. Provost Francis Doyle stated that students were free to leave campus, and those who remained could access available services and support.
