Democrats Condemn Trump's Unauthorized Venezuela Raid Amid War Powers Concerns
Democratic leaders have strongly condemned former President Trump's recent military operation in Venezuela, describing it as illegal and executed without congressional authorization or prior notification to key lawmakers.
The raid aimed to unseat Nicolás Maduro but was portrayed as a unilateral action that bypassed the War Powers framework and lacked approval from Congress. Key members of the 'gang of eight' reported they had not been briefed or contacted about the plan.
Critics argue that the President’s move constitutes an imperial adventure and a breach of constitutional processes, potentially undermining U.S. standing abroad. The action drew concerns regarding international law, with the UN secretary-general and others accusing the U.S. of breaching the UN Charter.
Despite the War Powers Resolution’s requirements for presidential consultation for military engagements, Trump is accused of bypassing Congress. While Trump framed the operation as a counter-narcotics mission and a temporary measure to control oil resources, opponents claim the true motives are personal enrichment and regime change rather than national security.
In response, a bipartisan Senate war powers resolution, supported by Senators Rand Paul and Chuck Schumer, is slated for a vote to block any future hostilities against Venezuela without congressional approval.
