Denmark Urges US to Respect Territorial Integrity Following Controversy Over Greenland Map Post
Denmark has urged the United States to respect its territorial integrity after Katie Miller, wife of a top Trump aide, posted a map of Greenland coloured in the US flag on the social media platform X, accompanied by the word 'SOON'. Katie Miller is married to the US president's deputy chief of staff. Danish ambassador to the US, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, reposted the message and emphasized the importance of continued close defence ties and respect for Denmark's territorial sovereignty.
President Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of Greenland becoming part of the US, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth. This has caused displeasure in Denmark, especially following the US appointing a special envoy to Greenland. Soerensen affirmed that the US and the Kingdom of Denmark remain close allies and should collaborate moving forward. Denmark has also announced increased defence spending of $13.7 billion in 2025, focusing on Arctic and North Atlantic security.
This exchange came shortly after the US executed a major operation against Venezuela, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and relocating them to New York. President Trump stated that the US would manage Venezuela and that oil companies would benefit from this arrangement.
Greenland has had self-government since 1979, but defence and foreign policy decisions remain with Denmark. The island has a population of about 57,000. While many Greenlanders favour independence, polls indicate strong opposition to joining the US. Greenland is also a part of NATO.
