Disney to Invest $1 Billion in OpenAI for Use of Iconic Characters in AI Platforms
Disney has announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, licensing more than 200 characters from various Disney franchises, including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, for use in AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Sora. Iconic characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Luke Skywalker, Deadpool, Zootopia's characters, Moana, and Encanto are included in the agreement. However, the deal excludes the use of talent likenesses or voices.
Access to these characters' likenesses for generating videos and images is expected to begin in early 2026. Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized that the collaboration aims to extend the reach of storytelling.
The deal comes amid ongoing scrutiny regarding AI usage and concerns about its impact on creative industries. Amid these concerns, Disney's external lawyers have sent Google a cease-and-desist letter over copyright issues, with BBC requesting a response from Google.
The Equity union has also highlighted the need to protect actors' rights, currently balloting performers on safeguards related to AI.
