DJ Lee Durrant to Host 24-Hour Radio Marathon to Protest Sewage Pollution in Windermere
DJ Lee Durrant of Lake District Radio will host a 24-hour live broadcasting marathon on 14 November 2025, starting at 08:00 GMT, to protest against illegal sewage spills in Windermere, a national park and World Heritage site.
The event will feature songs that peaked at number two on the charts, symbolizing the 'number two' sewage issue affecting the lake. Guests on the broadcast will include campaigners from Save Windermere, Surfers Against Sewage, environmental experts, and representatives from water companies.
A summer water quality assessment revealed that Windermere contained high levels of bacteria from human faeces. This pollution problem highlights broader concerns as only around 14% of England's rivers and lakes currently meet good ecological standards.
Durrant has criticized sewage dumping by United Utilities and questioned their dividend payments as part of his protest. He anticipates the 3am hour to be particularly challenging during the marathon and plans to switch to heavier rock music to maintain energy.
The primary aim of the protest is to end sewage dumping in Windermere and raise public awareness about sewage pollution issues in England.
