Downing Street Defends London Mayor Sadiq Khan Against Trump's Criticism
Downing Street has stated that former US President Donald Trump's criticism of London mayor Sadiq Khan is wrong and has defended Khan's record. This defence came a day after Downing Street had declined to criticise Trump's attack.
The Prime Minister's press secretary praised Khan for his achievements, including delivering free school meals, expanding London's clean air zone, and initiating a record number of council houses. The press secretary added that the Prime Minister is proud to call Khan both a colleague and friend.
Trump's critical remarks appeared in a Politico interview, where he described Khan as a disaster and disgusting. In response, Khan told Politico that Trump is obsessed with London's leadership and claimed that record numbers of Americans are moving to London due to the city's liberal values.
Opposition figures also responded: Sir Keir Starmer said Trump's criticism is wrong, while Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey urged the Prime Minister to tell Trump that interference with democracy is unacceptable, particularly in relation to US security strategy.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister's spokesman reiterated that Trump's comments are wrong, reflecting No 10's stance on the issue.
