Drivers Fined Due to Speed Camera Anomaly on Major Roads and Motorways in England
National Highways has identified an anomaly affecting about 10% of the Strategic Road Network in England, including motorways and major A-roads, where variable speed cameras and dynamic signs interact incorrectly. This issue has caused approximately 2,650 erroneous speeding detections since 2021, averaging fewer than two per day amidst more than six million activations during this period.
The problem arises due to a delay between cameras and dynamic signs after speed limits have changed, leading some drivers to be wrongly detected as speeding. While not all erroneous activations resulted in enforcement, those affected will be reimbursed and have points removed from licences where appropriate.
National Highways has apologised for the issue and has developed a data check to prevent wrongful prosecutions. The organisation is working closely with police to implement these checks. Enforcement remains in place, and safety measures will be increased. Drivers are advised to continue observing posted speed limits as efforts to rectify the situation proceed, with affected drivers to be contacted directly.
