Emma Aicher Wins St Moritz Women’s Downhill; Lindsey Vonn Finishes Second
Emma Aicher won the St Moritz women’s downhill, finishing 0.24 seconds ahead of Lindsey Vonn. Sofia Goggia took third place, 0.29 seconds behind Aicher, with Breezy Johnson finishing fourth, 0.40 seconds behind the winner. Lindsey Vonn, who led early in the race, landed awkwardly off a jump, lost balance, and slowed in the lower section, resulting in her second-place finish. This came one day after Vonn became the oldest woman to win a World Cup race. Vonn remains atop the downhill World Cup standings after two races.
Emma Aicher’s victory marks her third World Cup win and her second in downhill; she has also reached the podium in slalom this season. Vonn has made a notable return to the World Cup after nearly six years away, having undergone a partial knee replacement with titanium implants in her right leg.
Vonn’s teammate, Mikaela Shiffrin—the most successful women’s World Cup skier of all time—is expected to race the Sunday super-G. The St Moritz weekend will conclude with this super-G event on Sunday.
