Emma Raducanu was ruled out of the United Cup opener for Great Britain against Naomi Osaka due to a foot injury. Katie Swan replaced Raducanu in the tie held at RAC Arena in Perth on 4 January 2026. GB captain Tim Henman revealed the decision was difficult as Raducanu was very close to playing, but she has been managing the foot injury since the end of last season and could not specify further health details. She remained hopeful to compete later in the week.
In this opener, Billy Harris defeated Shintaro Mochizuki 7-6(4), 6-3 to open the tie for Great Britain. Jack Draper also withdrew from the event due to bone bruising to his left arm and is expected to be out for at least six months.
On the opposing side, Naomi Osaka faced illness during preparations, including coughing, and lost her opening match to Maria Sakkari.
