Eric Adams Claims Biden DOJ Used 'Lawfare' Against Him and Political Opponents
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has accused the Biden administration's Department of Justice (DOJ) of employing 'lawfare' against political opponents, including himself and former President Donald Trump. Adams alleges the DOJ has weaponized the justice system to target individuals on the basis of political disagreements, citing his own federal indictment and the pursuit of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago classified documents case as evidence.
Adams was federally indicted in September 2024 on charges including bribery, wire fraud, and illegal foreign campaign contributions involving Turkish officials and businessmen. He has pleaded not guilty to these allegations. Prosecutors have indicated that the investigation started in September 2021, predating Adams's public criticisms of immigration policy or his mayoral victory. Earlier in the year, some charges had been dropped at the request of the Trump administration.
Drawing from his experience as a police officer, state senator, and borough president, Adams claims his personal experience exemplifies the abuse of the justice system for political purposes. He is expected to leave office at the end of the year, with Zohran Mamdani anticipated to be sworn in as New York City's next mayor.
