Essex Police will not investigate Nigel Farage over an alleged overspend by Reform UK in the 2024 general election because more than a year has elapsed since the offence. The claim, raised by ex-campaigner Richard Everett, alleges that Reform UK spent more than the £20,660 spending limit including unreported expenses on leaflets, banners, utility bills, and refurbishment of a Clacton constituency office bar.

The allegation was first made in July 2024 and reported on 5 December 2024. However, police concluded that the report falls outside the statutory time limit for prosecution under the Representation of the People Act 1983, which requires cases to commence within one year.

The case was transferred from the Metropolitan Police to Essex Police, who determined that no investigation could proceed due to the time limit.

Nigel Farage became Reform UK's leader in June 2024 and was elected MP for Clacton in July 2024 with a majority of over 8,000. The Electoral Commission could still investigate the matter. Reform UK has been contacted for comment.
