Expert Tips on Home Maintenance to Save Money and Avoid Expensive Repairs
Regular home maintenance can save money by keeping appliances efficient and reducing the need for early replacements, according to Paula Higgins of the HomeOwners Alliance.
Limescale buildup affects kettles, washing machines, and boilers. To descale kettles regularly, use baking soda, lemon juice, or white vinegar. Descaler products such as Waitrose Essential Liquid Appliance Descaler (£2.50) and accompanying guides are available. Limescale catchers cost around £10 and kettle collectors about £1.50.
To extend the life of tumble dryers, remove lint after every use. It is also important to vacuum the filter housing and deep clean the filter every few months after unplugging the appliance.
Dishwashers should be maintained by topping up salt and rinse aid regularly. For example, 3kg of dishwasher salt costs around £3.75 and rinse/shine aid around £4.
Most freezers are frost-free, but if not, they should be defrosted annually. AO recommends unplugging the freezer, emptying it, placing towels and hot-water bowls inside, and then cleaning it with washing-up liquid or white vinegar to keep it clean.
Inspect roofs and gutters using binoculars, and replace a few tiles or repair flashing as needed to avoid costly damage. It is advised to check the loft quarterly after heavy rain. Blocked gutters can cause damp, mould, and structural issues, so gutters should be cleaned twice a year. Gutter brushes are available for purchase, such as a 4m roll for £24 at Wickes and options for £79.99 at Screwfix.
