FBI to Permanently Close J. Edgar Hoover Building and Relocate Workforce
The FBI has announced plans to permanently close the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, DC, and relocate its workforce to existing facilities. Some staff members will move to the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, occupying former USAID offices that were dismantled earlier in 2025. FBI Director Kash Patel revealed the plan on X, stating that shutting down the Hoover Building will allow resources to be redirected towards homeland defense, violent crime reduction, and national security at a lower cost.
The decision comes after more than 20 years of unsuccessful attempts to relocate the FBI headquarters. In November, Maryland leaders filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the scrapped relocation plans, highlighting that Congress had already appropriated funds for the move.
The Hoover Building, known for its brutalist 1960s architecture, has faced criticism over its design. J. Edgar Hoover himself reportedly described it as "the greatest monstrosity in Washington."
