Fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana during New Year celebrations results in numerous casualties
A fire broke out at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a luxury ski resort, during New Year celebrations around 01:30 local time. Several dozen people are feared dead and around 100 have been injured, many with severe burns.
Emergency services responded with 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 responders. Most of the injured were transported to the Valais hospital for treatment.
Authorities have stated there is no indication of an attack, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Earlier reports suggesting pyrotechnics may have been involved remain unconfirmed.
According to the Italian foreign ministry, police have indicated approximately 40 fatalities. The Italian ambassador has noted that identification of victims will take weeks.
Officials have indicated that significant work is required to identify the victims and return the bodies, with a district closure anticipated to facilitate these efforts.
