Fire at Le Constellation Bar in Crans-Montana Kills at Least 40 During New Year Celebrations
A fire at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana during New Year celebrations has left at least 40 people dead and 119 injured. By January 4, 2026, police had identified 24 victims, including 11 minors and six foreign nationals. Among the deceased are Swiss nationals aged between 14 and 31, as well as several foreign nationals: two 16-year-old Italians, a 39-year-old French man, a 16-year-old with dual Italian and UAE nationality, an 18-year-old Romanian, and an 18-year-old Turkish national.
Bar owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti are currently under criminal investigation for charges including homicide, bodily harm, and arson by negligence. Prosecutors stated the blaze likely began when sparkling candles were held too close to the basement ceiling. Investigations are focusing on building renovations, fire-extinguishing systems, escape routes, and the number of people present when the fire started.
Crans-Montana, which has a year-round population of approximately 6,000, has been deeply affected by the tragedy, both emotionally and economically. Residents have responded by donating blood, offering homes for displaced families, and holding masses in tribute. Many shops closed in sympathy.
Le Constellation was known as a popular venue for young people, offering free entry and affordable drinks. It attracted groups of teenagers from France and Italy who gathered to celebrate the New Year.
