Fired Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore Jailed After Shocking Dismissal
Sherrone Moore, who served as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football team, was fired and subsequently jailed in December 2025. He was initially detained in Saline before being transferred to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. As of December 10, 2025, no charges had been listed against him. Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel stated that credible evidence showed Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, which was a clear violation of the university's zero-tolerance policy.
Following Moore's dismissal, Francis Xavier "Biff" Poggi was appointed as the interim head coach. Poggi, who had previously served as interim head coach during a suspension related to a sign-stealing scandal, will be on the sideline for the Citrus Bowl scheduled for December 31, 2025. The Michigan Athletic Department declined to comment further on the personnel matters beyond its initial statement.
Moore became Michigan's head coach in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh left to become head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. In his first season, the team posted an 8-5 record and won the ReliaQuest Bowl. The following season, the Wolverines were 9-3 but lost to Ohio State. Prior to his head coaching appointment, Moore held various coaching roles at Michigan, including tight ends coach from 2018 to 2020, offensive line coach from 2021 to 2023, offensive coordinator in 2023, and he served as head coach for one game during Harbaugh's suspension. He was part of the Michigan staff when the team won a national championship.
Moore has been married to his wife Kelli since 2015, and together they have three daughters.
