Flood Watches Issued Across California Amid Prolonged Heavy Rainfall and Atmospheric Rivers
Flood watches have been issued across California through Friday, December 26, 2025, due to prolonged heavy rainfall and a series of atmospheric river events. Northern California recorded 50-75 mm (2-3 inches) of rain over the weekend as storms continue.
These atmospheric rivers are expected to bring heavy rain and mountain snow to northern and central California, with flood watches extending through Friday. Cumulative rainfall totals are forecast to widely exceed 50 mm (2 inches) across a broad area by Boxing Day, with 200-300 mm (8-12 inches) possible in the north-western corner of California and along western-facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Los Angeles could see 100-150 mm (4-6 inches) of rain between December 24 and 25, potentially making it one of the wettest Christmases on record. Flooding is likely, including river and urban flooding, along with risks of mudslides and rockslides in mountainous and foothill areas due to runoff from high ground.
Yosemite National Park is under winter storm warnings, with 1.8-2.4 metres (6-8 feet) of snowfall forecast by Boxing Day. Travel could be difficult in the area due to heavy snow and strong winds.
