Former Australia Cricketer Damien Martyn in Induced Coma After Contracting Meningitis
Damien Martyn, the 54-year-old former Australian cricket batter, is in an induced coma after contracting meningitis and is currently being treated in a hospital in Brisbane, Queensland. He reportedly became unwell on Boxing Day, 26 December, and was promptly hospitalized.
Cricket Australia confirmed Martyn's illness and highlighted his significant career, which spanned from 1992 to 2006 during which he played 67 Test matches and was part of two World Cup-winning teams. Martyn also played as an overseas player for Yorkshire in 2003.
Officials and former teammates have publicly expressed their support. Cricket Australia's chief executive Todd Greenberg extended best wishes to Martyn and his family. Former teammates Adam Gilchrist and Darren Lehmann offered messages of hope and prayers, with Gilchrist emphasizing that Martyn is receiving the best possible treatment. Brad Hardie, a former AFL star, also requested listeners to send positive thoughts for Martyn's recovery during a radio broadcast.
