France's National Post Office Hit by Suspected Cyberattack Disrupting Services Ahead of Christmas
France's national postal service, La Poste, experienced major disruptions on December 22, 2025, due to a suspected distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack affecting its websites, apps, and La Banque Postale's online banking services. Online services were largely inaccessible, causing customers to face difficulties sending last-minute parcels and collecting items during the busy pre-Christmas period, when the group typically handles over 2 million items.
While the attack slowed mail distribution including parcels, La Poste assured that customer data remained safe. In-store card payments and ATMs continued to operate as normal, although online payments required SMS verification for added security. La Banque Postale's mobile app access was also impacted.
Authorities were mobilized to resolve the incident, but no group immediately claimed responsibility. Earlier the same day, the BPCE group, which includes Banque Populaire and Caisse d'Épargne, experienced an IT malfunction that was resolved by midday.
This cyberattack follows heightened tensions after a cyberattack targeting the French interior ministry occurred just a week earlier. A 22-year-old suspect was detained in relation to that incident. Officials confirmed that sensitive police data was accessed, and the hack, claimed by the group Anonymous, reportedly compromised about 70 million police records affecting 16.4 million French citizens.
